Administrivia

Wednesday morning, Don Wright opened the PWG meeting, and provided details for the next meeting:

He also referenced the 1999 schedule for future PWG meetings:

Status Reports

Each of the Project Chairs (or appointed spokesperson) provided a brief status of the individual projects.

    1. Printer MIB Project (PMP)
    2. Chris Wellens and Lloyd Young (PMP co-Chairs) are now trying to get the Printer MIB published as a Proposed Standard instead of Draft Standard. No estimates were given on the timeframe for completion.

    3. Job Monitoring MIB Project (JMP)
    4. The Job Monitoring MIB document has been given a Last Call, but recently Xerox proposed a new change. This proposal will need to be reviewed for acceptance. Ron Bergman is concerned that adding the modification might delay things with the IETF.

    5. Finisher (FIN) MIB Project
    6. The Finisher MIB has been given a Last Call and it received no comments. It is now considered complete. The group wants to submit the document to the IETF together with the Printer MIB.

    7. Universal Printer Description File Format (UPDF) Project
    8. No status was reported.

    9. Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) Project
    10. Carl-Uno reported that 45 people attended the IPP session held at the IETF Plenary meeting (December 9.) Only 4 of the attendees were PWG members, but many IFax WG members were present.

At the IETF meeting, Carl-Uno reviewed the latest set of IPP documents. During discussions, the IETF Area Director admitted that he had not yet reviewed the documents. He made very vague comments that seemed to suggest that there might still be some obstacles in gaining IETF acceptance. He would not give a date estimate for the next step by the IESG.

A discussion about IPP as a Fax Service occurred during the IETF IPP session. Richard Shockey presented his paper on the topic. It was suggested that this effort should have its own IETF WG Charter. Several of the attendees will try to coordinate a "Birds of a Feather" meeting at the next IETF Plenary.

    11. 1394 PWG

Several additional items have been agreed on the Model and Command document for the 1394 Printing Device profile document. Greg LeClair reported that he believes things are nearing completion on the project. He thinks that the group will be able to wrap up the specification within the next few meetings.

PWG Process

There have been a few comments on the reflector about the IP section proposal submitted by Canon Information Systems. The most significant issue is that the PWG does not exist as a legal entity. As such, it is difficult for it to own Intellectual Property. This raises the question, "Should we incorporate?"

Larry Stein volunteered to report on the implications/requirements of incorporating.

DMTF CIM Presentation

At the January PWG meeting, Andrea Westein (?) from Microsoft will be presenting an hour-long presentation on the Desktop Management Task Force (DMTF) "Common Information Model."

Liaison Reports

No liaison reports were given.

PWG Plenary meeting adjourned.
