(5) CUPS and CUPS Filters (Till)

- CUPS Filters v1.0.47 released (Till)
  - No significant new features:
    - gstoraster crash fixes
    - PDF form support in bannertopdf to allow internationalization of
      banner and test pages

- CUPS
  - Working towards running the Scheduler (the CUPS daemon, cupsd) and
    other printing-related daemons on-demand on mobile devices (and also
    on the desktop to make laptop batteries lasting longer)

  - Added support for running avahi-daemon on-demand
    - (Patch from Till, in Ubuntu and Debian packages)

    - CUPS picks up avahi-daemon when started after cupsd and registers
      the shared printers for Bonjour broadcasting

    - CUPS supports stopping and restarting avahi-daemon
      - when avahi-daemon is restarted it re-registers the printers to
        carry on broadcasting

  - Added support for running cupsd on-demand
    - (Patch from Till, in Ubuntu and Debian packages)

    - Let cupsd automatically terminate after 30 sec (configurable) of
      inactivity
      - when started via socket activation (systemd or Upstart); or
      - when started with the -x command line option; or
      - when the IdleExitTimeout directive in cupsd.conf is used

  - Feature Freeze for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty) on 20 Feb 2014
    - Currently the Debian and Ubuntu packages of CUPS are not synced
      - will get resynced after the Ubuntu release
      - All patches are or will be committed to CUPS upstream

  - In Debian, socket-activated invocation of CUPS and this way running
    cupsd on-demand is fully implemented
    - unstable when running Debian with systemd as init process (PID 1)

  - In Ubuntu, an Upstart bug still needs to be fixed
    - prevents socket activation of daemons
