- Avahi is very important for driverless IPP Print, Scan, Fax, and System Service,
but also for the OS and other major applications in general.
- Till has had no answer from Trent Lloyd yet.

- CUPS 2.2.10 is a bug fix release that solves a security issue and several other bugs,
mostly related to driverless IPP printing.

- Fixed a memory leak for some IPP (extension) syntaxes.
- The `cupscgi`, `cupsmime`, and `cupsppdc` support libraries are no longer installed as
shared libraries.
- The `snmp` backend is now deprecated.
- CUPS Filters Summary (Till)
- Current release is CUPS Filters 1.21.5.
- CUPS Filters 1.21.4 and 1.21.5 are bug fix releases with:
- Adaptations to build with Poppler up to version 0.71
- Fixes for problems with duplicate execution of page management options (multiple
copies, collate, reverse order, ...)
- Fixes on cupsbrowsed to not make cupsd hog all the CPU and to reliably identify
queues temporary CUPS queues to make them permanent
- Obsolete filters
- Note that the deprecated (and not built by default) filter pdftoopvp still does not
build with Poppler 0.71, but we have not built it for one year now (12 December 2017)
and no one has complained about its absence, so we have reasonable confidence that it
does not have current users any more.
- We also stopped building the filter pdftoijs one year ago now (12 December 2017) and
also did not receive any complaints.
- So these two driver interfaces did not get adopted or else stopped being used a long
time ago.
- As nowadays these filters are not actually needed any more (with driverless printing
on practically any printer including the cheapest ones via Printer Applications) we
can soon remove them from the CUPS Filters source repository.
- CUPS Filters 1.21.6 will get released soon as it addresses a crasher in cups-browsed.
- CUPS Filters v1.21.6 planned changes (Till)
- cups-browsed: When updating the CUPS queues, also removed and unregistered queues and
not only created queues got checked for HTTP timeouts, which caused crashes on shutdown
(Debian bug #916149).
- pdftops: Use the PS interpreter of Poppler for all Apple LaserWriter 16/600, 4/600,
12/640, 12/600, 12/660 as they all seem to not work with Ghostscript's PostScript output
(Issue #76).
- cups-browsed: On shutdown queues got removed even if they still had jobs (Debian bug
#908147).
- CUPS Filters v1.21.5 release on 5 December 2018 (Till)
- cups-browsed: We cannot reliably determine whether a CUPS queue is temporary, so we
apply the procedure to make a temporary queue permanent to any unshared queue (Debian
bugs #910882, #905850, #908604).
- pdftoraster, pdftopdf, pdftoijs, pdftoopvp: Do not use the Poppler-specific "GBool",
"gFalse", "gTrue" any more, as Poppler has switched to standard "bool", "false", "true"
in version 0.71.0 (Issue #69).
- CUPS Filters v1.21.4 release on 23 November 2018 (Till)
- cups-browsed: Limit the number of retries for creating a print queue when it comes
to HTTP timeouts. Number of retries given by HttpMaxRetries directive in
cups-browsed.conf. Thanks to Zdenek Dohnal for the patch (Pull request #73, Red Hat
bug #1648697).
- cups-browsed: Read out current time right before setting the timeouts. Thanks to Zdenek
Dohnal for the patch (Pull request #71, Red Hat bug #1648697).
- libcupsfilters: In the PPD generator for driverless IPP printing let
"*cupsManualCopies: true" lines get added to the PPD if printing is done in a raster
format as then pdftopdf needs to generate the copies.
- pdftoraster, pdftoopvp, pdftoijs: Fix build with Poppler >= 0.70 (Issue #69, Pull
request #70).
- pdftopdf: Fixed printing multiple copies on driverless IPP printers. When printing
collated copies the multiple copies got applied twice, resulting in n*n instead of n
copies (CUPS issue #5433).
- pdftoraster, pdftoopvp, pdftoijs: Poppler removed memCheck and gMemReport functions,
remove appropriate calls (Issue #62, Pull request #66).
- F2F meeting of GSoC 2018 students - Aveek and Till discussed and decided to organise a F2F meeting with OP GSoC students - September 2019 in India, since most of the OP GSoC students are from India.

- GSoC 2019 Summary
- Aveek has started to search for GSoC 2019 OP students.
- Aveek says we should be very strict w/ accepting other Linux Foundation projects
and mentors, based on last year's experience.
- According to Google, the project idea list is very important for a mentor organization
to be accepted in GSoC 2019.
- We need to complete our web site renovation to post OpenPrinting ideas on the new site.
- Central point will be the Printer Applications deprecating the classic Printer
(and Scanner) drivers of CUPS filters and PPDs (or SANE modules).
- Printer Applications can also be used to easily get distribution-independent driver
packages when packaging them as a snap. Due to the network-style communication
(ipp://localhost:<port>/...) with CUPS no special snap interfaces are needed.
- GSoC 2019 Projects
(1) Generic Framework to turn legacy drivers consisting of CUPS filters and PPDs into
Printer Applications.
(2) Create a Printer Application out of Foomatic.
(3) Create Printer Applications from HPLIP, foo2zjs, Gutenprint, ...
(4) Create Printer Applications for arbitrary SANE-supported Scanners to make them
available as driverless IPP network scanners. This would allow for easily making
distribution-independent Scanner driver packages.
(5) Create a SANE driver for IPP Scanners, so that Linux applications can use IPP
network scanners. Until the hardware manufacturers have provide appropriate devices,
this driver will serve for using the Scanner drivers of (4) above.
(6) IPP: Linux GUI application (can be part of GNOME printer tool) to administer MFD
devices using IPP System Service.
(7) cups-filters: pdftoraster filter needs to be done without need of unstable Poppler APIs.
(8) IPP: ipptool test suite for IPP System Service.
(9) IPP: ipptool test suite updates for IPP Everywhere v1.1.
Note: With (4) and (5) we would get the very first use of the IPP Scan Service standard,
even before the hardware industry picks it up. It would also be a sample implementation
of both ends (Client and Server) of the IPP standard.
